STUDENT RESOURCES

The Internet is a valuable educational tool for students. The sites listed below are known as "kid-friendly" sites. However, as students link from page to page, it is difficult to predict where they might end up. Please monitor your child's Internet use closely. Ninety Six Elementary does not endorse the use of chat rooms or other methods of exchanging personal information with others. Happy and safe surfing!

	Investing for kids Think Quest site - This Web site is designed by kids for kids. It examines stocks, bonds, mutual funds and the like.  It teaches the principles of saving and investing. It also includes a stock game.

	Hurricanes - How to track a hurricane, classification, past hurricanes, videos, etc.
	Scholastic's Weather Watch: Hurricanes - Discover the power and fury of these tropical storms - all about hurricanes, ask the expert, hurricane news, etc...
	"EYE" of the Storm Web Quest  - This WebQuest will give the students an insight into the destructive forces of tornadoes and hurricanes.
	Earthquake WebQuest - Advanced webquest - includes great links to recent news, patterns and background information. Also has student and teacher directions available.
	Volcano WebQuest - Will that Volcano Spoil our party? Has some good links and background in volcanoes.

	The NINE PLANETS - "An overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system."
	Space -The Final Frontier" WebQuest - The student will be able to learn more about the Solar System: planets, astronauts, space clothing, other objects in space.
	"By Way of the Moon" WebQuest - students will analyze the space program in the 1960's in regard to its social, political, and economic effects. It will involve the language arts and science disciplines. It would be appropriate for middle school students but could be adapted for elementary.
	Exploratorium's Exhibit on Frogs: frog articles, interactive exhibits and hands-on activities.
	Frog Calls:  - Is that a frog I hear? Which frog???  Here's a diverse set of calling frogs.
	Digging for Dinosaurs - fossil activities, resource links for children
	Dinoland Webquest - a virtual prehistoric journey to Australia as a paleontologist to investigate a variety of dinosaurs.  You will be able to gather as much information as possible about your favorite dinosaur.

	Altavista- Its comprehensive coverage and wide range of power searching commands makes it a favorite among researchers.
	Google - Makes heavy use of link popularity as a primary way to rank web sites. This can be helpful in finding good sites in response to general searches such as "cars" and "travel," because users across the web have voted for good sites by linking to them.
	Yahoo - Yahoo is the web's most popular search service and has a reputation for helping people find information easily.
	Ask Jeeves - A human-powered search service that aims to direct you to the exact page that answers your question.
	Northern Light - features a large index of the web, along with the ability to cluster documents by topic.
	RefDesk - a source for facts on the Internet.
	Search Engine Watch - Search Engine Listings, Searching Tips, etc.

	Yahooligans - The web guide for kids
	Ask Jeeves for Kids - Just type in a question and select ask. Study tools, monthly links, tours, etc...
	Enchanted Learning - Science, languages, holidays, social studies - tons of links for kids
	Safe Surf Kids Wave - partial lists of "safe surf" approved sites by age.
	KidsClick - is a web search engine for kids K-8 created by librarians that filters out non-child friendly sites. It also has an index of links by subject. The sites also have a reading level description.
	Virtual Facts Online - provided by refdesk.com, has a facts and subjects index (probably for upper elementary/middle)
	KidInfo - school subjects, reference sources, student leisure
