GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM

District 52 provides a comprehensive program for students identified as academically gifted and

talented. Students in grades 3-8 are served through the PLUS Program (Providing Learning for

Unique Students) at the elementary, and middle schools. The overall goal of the PLUS program is

to enhance the cognitive and affective development of students of high academic ability. The

curriculum in the PLUS Program emphasizes development of creative thinking and research skill,

and competency in working with computers through science. A multi-step screening procedure is used for identifying students for the gifted program. Students are placed in the program based on achievement scores, aptitude scores and performance tasks. Either teachers or parents may recommend students for

consideration in the program. Any parent of a child not already being served by the gifted

program who wishes to recommend their child may contact the district office at 543-3100.

“NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND”

PARENT NOTIFICATION

In January 2002, President George W. Bush signed the “No Child Left Behind” Act (NCLB) into law. Designed to ensure that all children have an opportunity to obtain a quality education, this new law is already bringing many changes to South Carolina's schools.

As a parent of a student in Greenwood District 52, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers and instructional assistants who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child's classroom teachers, and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner.

If you would like to receive any of this information, please call Rhonda McDowell at the District Office at 864-970-7509, and we will mail this information to you. We look forward to partnering with you this year as we work to provide a quality education for your child.

Greenwood School District 52 utilizes its Federal Title II No Child Left Behind Funds to provide professional development

activities for new and continuing teachers to improve standards-based instruction in the classroom.
