Greenwood School District 52 Announces Monday, April 8 as Early Dismissal Day

Greenwood School District 52 announced today that Monday, April 8 will be an early dismissal day for the district due a partial solar eclipse. The partial solar eclipse will occur from 1:30 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the sun.

The dismissal schedule for April 8th is as follows:

  • Primary & Elementary Dismissed at 12:00 p.m.
  • Middle & High School Dismissed at 12:30 p.m.
  • Teachers and Teaching Assistants dismissed at 1:30

Students will receive bag lunches prior to dismissing school on April 8th. All outside activities at the schools are suspended between 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to science experts, there is a time period during the partial solar eclipse that could negatively impact students' vision. Due to the potential danger to students, Ninety Six schools will not have any after school, athletic, or outdoor activities until after 4:30 p.m.

Superintendent Dr. Beth Taylor stated, “As a precaution, our district has decided to have an early dismissal day on April 8 due to the partial solar eclipse in our area. Based on our research and information provided by experts, there is a potential safety hazard for students’ vision during a portion of the solar eclipse. We want our students to enjoy this phenomenal event safely with their families and friends. We would encourage parents to review the resources we have provided to ensure a safe viewing experience.”
